New partnership to improve nutrition and functionality of

TORONTO, November 29, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Protein Industries Canada has announced a partnership that will develop nutritionally and functionally superior quality plant-based food and beverage products.

YoFiit, Avena Foods Limited and Roquette Canada have partnered to solve technical challenges in formulating plant-based milks, probiotic-rich yogurts, and other functional plant-based analogues – with a primary focus on maintaining the nutritional equivalence of animal-based products, and achieving the highest functionality of existing products in the consumer goods industry. The $1.7 million project will showcase Canada’s capacity – not only as a supplier of high-quality ingredients, but also to adopt cutting-edge food technologies and patent-pending processes to develop unique products in the global vegetable protein market.

YoFiit, a food technology startup that provides nutritious plant-based snacks and milk alternatives available in grocery stores across Canada, will lead the development of new food manufacturing technologies and new food products.

This project demonstrates the power of collaboration and the importance of capacity building along the ecosystem. By pairing YoFiit, a small start-up, with global leaders like Avena and Roquette Canada, innovation, marketing and expansion happens faster — while the economic value and associated expertise stay in Canada, said Protein Industries Canada CEO Bill Grewell. “By increasing the capacity to manufacture ingredients and food in Canada, we are strengthening our local food supply chain, helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions, creating jobs and supporting a strong and more prosperous economy.”

Avena and Roquette Canada will build on the success seen in previous Protein Industries Canada projects, including the creation of new plant-based protein ingredients that use Canadian crops. This past collaborative success will allow companies to find innovative, direct applications of their ingredients in products such as YoFiit’s vegan foods and beverages, while bringing in new ingredients and technical expertise that will help drive the project forward.

Avena and Roquette Canada will provide components for the project and will gain critical knowledge about the functionality and performance of their components in unique and innovative CPG products.
