Need a new pet for the new year? Dog rooms full, pet pantry running low at the RCACP in Roanoke

ROANOKE, VA (WFXR) – Just a few days into 2022, the RCACP is seeking help from the Roanoke Valley community as stray, adoptable dogs are piling up in shelter dog rooms and their supplies low in the pet pantry.

The RCACP first announced on Monday, January 3, that the shelter was completely stocked with dogs, including more than a dozen stray species.

As of this writing, the RCACP database lists 22 feral and stray animals—including 16 dogs and puppies, five cats and kittens, and one goat—that have been found in Botetourt County, Roanoke County, Roanoke City, and the Town of Vinton.

If you live in the Roanoke Valley and are missing a pet, check the RCACP because your furry friend may be waiting for you at the shelter.

“Unfortunately, since then [the RCACP] It must accommodate all stray animals, and it must have available space; If space is not made available, they will have to make some difficult decisions,” Angels of Assisi wrote on Facebook on Monday, urging community members to help the RCACP. “Please consider saving a life and opening your home and heart to a new member of the furry family.”

The RCACP also posted a “highlight of approved pets” to Facebook on Tuesday, January 4, saying the shelter is still full and needs new pet parents.

If you would like to check the list of adoptable animals, fill out an application for adoption, or learn more about the adoption process and costs at the RCACP, follow this link.

After filling out your adoption application, email it to The shelter will then contact you to set up a meet-and-greet with your potential new pet.

RCACP is also running out of supplies — especially dry food for dogs and puppies — at the community pet store in the wake of the holiday season. However, wet dog food, wet and dry cat food, cat litter, and dog and cat treats are also welcome donations due to the high demand for them.

“The RCACP Pet Store provides assistance to pet owners and their pets when they are going through tough times,” the shelter posted on social media Tuesday. “By donating to Pet Pantry, you are helping the people and pets in your community stay together.”

You can also support the RCACP’s pet store, as well as its adoption program and adoption program, by checking out the shelter’s Amazon Wish List, which has plenty of items you can donate to RCACP.
