Humane Society sees early benefits from Betty White Challenge

BECKLEY, WOAY (WOAY) – After she tragically passed away on New Year’s Eve, fans of the late Betty White started what social media is calling the Betty White Challenge.

The concept is simple: Betty White loved animals, and on her birthday, January 17, fans are encouraging people to donate to animal shelters.

The challenge is really to bring about positive change in local communities. The Raleigh County Humane Society says they’ve already seen quite a few people come to donate specifically in Betty White’s name.

We really ran out of donations,” said Alexis Johnston, social media coordinator for the Humane Society. “Without the support of the community, none of this would be possible.”

Donations pay for everything at the Humane Society. From the water bill to filling bowls, cleaning cages, and paying for veterinary services.

The Humane Society always accepts monetary and material donations. What they need most include pine litter, wet cat food and albino dog food.

But what they need most of all is for people to come and adopt or take care of an animal. Just a few weeks ago, the shelter was packed with approximately 140 animals, and they are still in dire need of people to take these animals home.

“If you are considering adoption, now is the time to do so. We have a lot of options available to you.”
