Dog Food Recall 2021: Midwestern Pet Foods Recalls Dog Food Over Salmonella

There were quite a few pet food recalls from the start of the year through 2021. Another recall was made on March 26, and this case includes a variety of brands.

Midwestern Pet Foods, the same company that issued a massive recall in January over aflatoxin, has recalled products from ten dog and cat food brands due to possible salmonella contamination. The brands in question include CanineX, Earthborn Holistic, Venture, Unrefined, Sportmix Wholesomes, Pro Pac, Pro Pac Ultimates, Sportstrail, Sportmix and Meridian. The full list of returned bags is very Long.

The recall is for food produced at the company’s Monmouth, Illinois facility. Though, these products have been distributed nationwide and to online retailers. You’re looking for an “M” in the date code on the bag that indicates it was produced at the facility where salmonella was detected, according to the company recall. The batch code information is printed on the back of the bag and looks like this: “EXP AUG/02/22/M1/L#.

The memo notes that “pets infected with salmonella may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Some pets will only have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain.”

Salmonella can affect animals that eat the product and people who come in contact with it. So, check to make sure you don’t have any of these products in the house. If you do, throw it away or return it for a refund. The recall recommends that pet food be destroyed and disposed of in a way that ensures that children, pets, and wildlife do not get into the bags. If you have already fed your pet food, you should make sure to clean the pet’s bowls and any other surfaces that the food has come into contact with.
