If you’re looking for a new best friend to play in the snow or watch the winter weather from your window, check out this week’s list of animals ready to take home with you today!
In addition, the NCSPCA would like to remind everyone to always bring pets indoors, including outdoor cats, at the first sign or warning of a storm. Pets that are left outside in extreme temperatures, especially without food or shelter, are at risk of hypothermia, frostbite, and even death. Some reminders:
-
Do not let your dog off leash after a heavy snowfall. Dogs can lose their scent during winter storms and get lost easily.
-
Stock up on all pet food and medicine your animals may need ahead of time. * Traveling may be more difficult or impossible.
-
Prepare for power outages, especially if your family includes fish, reptiles, or pocket animals.
-
Keep a pet emergency kit and supplies close at hand with items such as medical records, water, pet food, medication, and pet first aid supplies.
-
Clean the dog’s feet with a damp cloth after going outside. Melted salt can be very painful for dogs’ feet and can make them sick when ingested.
-
Have a coat and socks ready for any dog that needs them. Be prepared to protect your pets from strong winds and cold.
-
Leaving pets outside in extreme temperatures can be a crime. If you see something, please report it to your local SPCA or by calling 516-THE-SPCA.
Available for adoption in the town of Hempstead Animal Shelter

Elijah came to the shelter as a stray in July 2021—and boy, was he terrified. Months later, he’s still very anxious, but all he wants is a loving home, to feel safe, and to cuddle. Elijah is 100% home trained, enjoys caged hangouts, is very loving and affectionate, and just wants to cuddle and massage his tummy. Elijah is very friendly with dogs but prefers to be the only pet in the house because he seems very afraid of other dogs and doesn’t want to participate at all. He will run away if the dog tries to play with him. Therefore, ideally, a friendly, well-balanced sibling dog or “only child” is best. Staff and volunteers will love to see him continue to come out of his shell in a loving and safe home. His ideal home would be with a patient family with only two adults for now, due to his general nervousness in the shelter.
To learn more about Elijiah, please contact the shelter’s placement team at 516-785-5220 or response@tohmail.org.

Meet the Animals of the Week at Smithtown Animal Shelter, Eris, Ian, and Luna! Iris and Ian are a pair of bonded siblings who were brought to the animal shelter as part of the Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) program. Ian and Iris are 7 month old kittens who were very moody and shy when they first arrived at the shelter, but over time, they have learned to love and trust people. These two terrifying lovers would do well together in a quiet home without any children.
Luna is an affectionate 2-year-old who was found with her kittens through TNR. Luna gets along well with other cats, and she loves to get people’s attention. She is a cute and compact lady that would make a perfect addition to any family.

Finnley (Finn) is a very special puppy who needs a very special family. Finn is a nervous boy who needs a quiet home to learn how to be a dog. He has lived a very difficult life and needs understanding and a patient family to help him adjust to home life. Until recently, Finn was living in an outside barn chained to a tree when his owner died and the shelter was called to come to him. The amazing staff and volunteers have taken care of him and he is now ready to move on and find his forever family.
Finley is absolute love. He loves playing fetch, going to the pool, rolling on the grass, learning new tricks and just being with people. He just needs someone to give him time and patience to become the best boy he can be. Finn should be the only pet and will do best with teens or older.

Available for adoption in North Shore Animal League America

** BIG ATTENTION ** Looking for a friendly lady who will occupy a place in your heart? When Carnita (adopt #BF3796) needed a safe place to land, the Animal America League welcomed her with the promise of a happy new beginning on the horizon. This sexy 10-year-old keeps up with the little ones in her room, and loves admiring the play sets off her shelf. Her favorite pastime is receiving ear scrubs from friends in exchange for a reward. This is a much better deal than what I’ve gotten in the past. NSALA vets have discovered that the Karenita has hyperthyroidism and will be covered by NSALA Pet Health Centers, making her transition to life in your home easy for everyone.

Silly Seneca (adopt #BF3871) needed some lessons about harnessing her endless energy. Fortunately for her, she found herself in the best school she could be taught! This dynamic 4 month old kitten has a zest for life which leaves many of her quiet companions asking for time out, but energetic kittens like her having the best time of their lives! If you can hook up with the class clown, and you need a friend for your cat at home, you’re in for a treat! Seneca’s energy may be great for little kids under the age of 12, but in her right hand, you’ll find her breeding for more massages before she wrestles with her new best friend!

**Big Alert** When cute Samantha (Adoption #D44734) lost her lifelong companion, she also lost her home. NSALA welcomed this beautiful 14-year-old with open arms, rewarding them with their full confidence that a bright future awaits her in a peaceful home once again. NSALA vets have developed a plan to treat hyperthyroidism, and you will receive this care at cost through Pet Health Centers. They want to make sure nothing stands in the way of Samantha to be cherished again by a devoted heroine’s family.

If you are looking for an inspiring companion, look no further than Lenape (adopt #BF3872)! This 5-year-old black beauty is more than just a handsome face; He is a real survivor! Despite his humble beginnings here on Long Island, he seizes this moment to captivate every human he meets, to let them know how lucky he feels to be treated with the love and warmth of his family at Animal League America. Wait until he finds out that the best is yet to come once a lucky family of his own picks him up and delivers him to his first real home. Leaps missed individual time early in their life, so we’re looking for a home that makes them their top priority as the only pet. You will be glad that you have someone who is eager to thank you by your side even more.

Whatever adventures this two-year-old Galapagos (adoption number D48059) may have experienced before arriving at Bianca’s Furry Friends Feline Adoption Center, this weary boy is keeping it a secret from us. The past is behind him, and better days are to come, so he expects gentle hands and patience from the new humans he greets. If you live in a quiet home (with kids over 12) with space to welcome someone’s content to leave unexpected excitement behind for a safe and secure life, Galapagos will love filling that void.

Despite the tough times 6-year-old Kiki (credit #H211452) has had recently when he lost his home, he’s open to new possibilities – especially if it means lots of rubs on the cheek. NSALA vets have treated Keke for megacolon and to make his care as simple to manage as possible, join their sponsor program. This means that his care is fully covered by Pet Health Centers. NSALA wants Keke to come home as soon as possible—he’s so cute he doesn’t have to wait—and the partnership with their medical team will make caring for Keke as easy as loving him. If you’ve already fallen for his big head, you’re in for a treat when you discover his big heart!

**Double Adoption** Despite the difficult lives they had before they were rescued, the two year old sisters (adopt #BF3948) and Spotts (adopt #BF3949) pledged to support each other. You’ll find them comforting each other as they navigate all the early stages of their lives. These beautiful girls have never known so much freedom before. A quiet, experienced home is what they deserve for a fresh start, so if you have older kids and a patient heart, you might be exactly the one they’ve been waiting to be their ultimate hero.
If you would like to meet or adopt any of these wonderful adoptables, please email DoritS@animalleague.org for more information or visit the campus in Port Washington.
