2022 Pet Industry Events You Won’t Want to Miss | Blogs

What a year it has been!

I don’t think anything can overcome the difficulties 2020 brought, but 2021 certainly tried. Due to crazy times and employment issues, I have not attended any trade fairs or conferences for over two years. I’m looking forward to getting back to shows in 2022, so I’m setting my schedule.

The premiere in my lineup is probably one you’ve never heard of, but I’m sure the offer will be my favorite and the most useful one for small independent retailers. It’s the Healthy Dog Show, a consumer event, that took place in Albany, New York, from March 19-20. You may have done a double thing when you said “consumer event”. The show is for anyone who wants a better life for their pets, and the consumers in attendance are what I call “super consumers.” They are the ones who read all the cutting edge information and spread the word to anyone who listens. Many of them are influencers and have a lot of followers on their various social media platforms. These people are the people your best customers listen to. I spoke with the show’s founder, Dr. Laurie Cooger, and she told me that the primary objective of the event is education and the secondary objective is to connect with like-minded people. If you’re still not sold, check out our lineup of speakers.

Dr. Karen Becker, who has to be one of the most followed vets in the world, will be at the event. Dr. Baker is just a wonderful woman talking about nutrition and wellness. She and another speaker, Rodney Habib, co-authored the bestselling book “The Forever Dog”. Habib also has the largest pet health page on Facebook. Those two alone would be reason enough to come, but the show also brings us Dr. Kendra Pope, Susan Thexton, Susan Jarrett, and the OG (the original godfather) of raw pet food, Steve Brown. Check out the full selection and more at healthydogexpo.com. Make sure you say “hello” if you see me there.

Let me take a moment to say more about “The Forever Dog”. This is a great book, and just what partial freelancers need to read and refer back to. Dr. Baker and Habib provide the latest information to help our pets live longer, healthier lives. It’s a great reference for your front counter, too. If you’ve been a long-time reader of my column, you know I encourage you to recommend periodic diets, and the book summarizes why. I even use it to train my staff. The book also details why and how to feed raw bones. The tips and information referred to are great talking points for your clients. I highly recommend reading “The Forever Dog” published by Harper Wave. I know that many small independent stores offer books for sale in their stores. You might be able to sign it at the Healthy Dog Expo. Visit foreverdog.com to find out more.

In the immediate aftermath of this show will be the World Pet Show, to be held next year in Orlando, Florida, March 23-25. I’m sure everyone knows the Global Pet Expo, which is organized by the American Pet Products Association (APPA) and the Pet Industry Distributors Association (PIDA), but if not, it’s one of the biggest producing pet industry shows. One of the advantages of Global Pet Expo is that it is the first big show of the year. This means that many companies will be debuting at the fair or showcasing their new products. In February 2020, right before the COVID pandemic brought us to a temporary end to most in-person trade shows, the show hosted nearly 1,000 exhibitors and 3,000 product launches, allowing attendees to view the latest and greatest new products. Check globalpetexpo.org for all the details.

The next show not to be missed in 2022 is SuperZoo, which will take place in Las Vegas from August 22-25 and is organized by the World Pet Association (WPA). I’m a huge fan of SuperZoo, due in large part to its educational offerings. During his August 2021 presentation, he gave more than 70 seminars. I don’t think you can find a lot of education related to the pet industry in one place other than SuperZoo. This year’s SuperZoo was the first major in-person pet trade fair since COVID became a pandemic, featuring a 200,000-square-foot display floor featuring more than 700 exhibitors and hundreds of new products at the New Products Show and innovation incubator. Check out superzoo.org for more information.

It’s been two tough years, but hopefully 2022 will bring some things back to normal in our lives. I can’t wait until I can come back to see all my friends, learn more information to help our pets and meet new friends. I hope to meet you!
